The shadows are what Emily thought were dead, old people. I'm not so sure they are dead, because she said she saw one of the peoples slippers move. They are the shadows of Sugar Hill Hall.
Emily saw a lot of shadows but the most scary one was the chair shadows, but they weren't shadows they were old people just standing there it looked like they were dead.
